Experimental Work
Look Directly into the Camera!
I've been experimenting with "direct to camera" interviews - fed up with the whole "pretend the camera isn't there!" routine. I've used the "Eye Direct" a number of times now for projects currently in the works. I've fallen in love with it and subjects are comfortable using it. It's inspired by Errol Morris's device he uses for documentaries. Essentially theres a transparent mirror in a box in front of the lens that allows the subject to see the interviewer, while looking directly into the camera. It's wild.
This is an ongoing study led by WCVB Boston Investigative Reporter Mike Beaudet and Northeastern University Journalism professor John Wihbey. Over the last year, I oversaw the digital asset collection of local television news broadcasts from across the country. We examined the top markets news coverage, coded our findings, and remixed news packages to be digital first. Below is an example of a story I remixed for the project. You can read more about the project here.
This is the original news package produced by ABC15: Arizona (KNXV-TV)
This is the remixed version for a digital first audience.
The "GIFS" of Love
Two friends of mine were getting married, and they were entertaining the idea of some sort of video capturing the days events. I pitched them a mini-doc about THEM, with the wedding being the ending to the story. I shot a bunch of broll of the couple, conducted interviews with them and their families. In the end, I felt like I didn't have enough footage to make a cohesive mini-doc. But I had an enormous amount of dialogue that I really wanted to bring to life for them. So I switched to an oral history format with GIF images from what I had shot.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN! By the Numbers
This was produced for a data reporting class in my graduate studies at Northeastern University School of Journalism. With a partner, we scrapped all the lyrics from all of Springsteen's discography and made a data visualization out of what we found were his most used words. It's kind of telling. I'm by no means a data vis expert, and found the entire process extremely difficult, but it was nice to get my hands dirty in some interesting data.
The Women's March 2017, Washington D.C. - Podcast
This was produced on location at the National Mall in Washington D.C. the day after President-Elect Donald J. Trump was inaugurated. You can listen below:
"The Margins" Cover
This is a cover I designed for an in-class publication called, "The Margins." It focused on social justice issues ranging from the transgender community to African-American entrepreneurship. I am obsessed with magazine covers and this was a thrill to design. Took a lot of inspiration from George Lois's famous Vietnam War Esquire cover from the 1960s.
360 Video of Rowing Practice on the Charles River
This was produced for Northeastern University. If you look down in the video - you'll see me holding the 360 Video camera pole.
